The Government is asking parents to keep children at home whenever possible – schools remain open only for children who need to attend.

Lettter to Parents/Carers RE Reopening from 1st June

Dear Parent/Carer,

Following the Prime Minister’s recent announcements explaining why the Government is of the view that it is now safe for schools and academies to open for more children to attend, we are looking at reopening Co-op Academy Portland from Monday 1st June, at the earliest, for children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6.

Currently, the academy is just open for children of critical workers and vulnerable pupils. This arrangement will still continue moving forward.

In reopening, we can assure you that we are following the Government’s advice as the safety of our pupils and staff is paramount. However, as you are aware, it can be very difficult to keep young children apart at all times. Therefore, as also recognised in the Government’s advice, we cannot guarantee social distancing between children. Please be assured, though, we are taking measures to make the return of children and staff to the academy as safe as possible.

We are looking forward to welcoming back our children; however, we also recognise that parents may be anxious about this. For the avoidance of doubt, it is entirely your decision whether or not to send your child. There will be no penalising of children or families if parents decide not to send their children to school. To help us plan for re-opening, it would be very helpful if you could let us know your intentions.

On a practical note, and in line with Government advice, when travelling to school, please walk, cycle or use a car. Public transport should be avoided where possible.

I can’t give you any more details with regards to timings, arrangements for dropping students off or anything else at the moment as we are currently working through these.

We’re looking to get an understanding of whether you would be sending you child to school on Monday 1st June or after. You have been completing a short survey via Class Teachers, which gives us some idea of what to expect so that we can look at staffing and catering arrangements in the event that we reopen.

Thank you. We hope you’re all keeping safe and are looking forward to seeing you all at the academy gates as soon as we can.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs K Allen
Acting Headteacher
