Blue plaque unveiled for former pupil Dixie Dean
A blue plaque commemorating the site of the school where Everton and England legend Dixie Dean studied has been unveiled at Co-op Academy Portland.
Dixie Dean played for Everton over 399 times, scoring 349 goals – making him one of the most successful footballers of all time. The plaque was unveiled at an event at the school attended by Dixie’s daughter Barbara and Everton legend Graeme Sharp.
Dean attended Laird Street Primary School, which was on the site of our Co-op Academy Portland, until the age of 11.
Headteacher Phil Crossley said “It’s fantastic to have a bit of history on our site. Not just Birkenhead history but Dixie was a very successful international footballer. It serves as a reminder to our students that from humble beginnings you can be anything you want to.
Our students are now making their own history!”
The plaque was commissioned by the Everton Heritage Society.
