Bringing Smiles Across Generations: Students Share Special Moments with Care Home Residents
Beehive class have been visiting Oxton Grange care home in an intergenerational exchange. The pupils have loved chatting to and reading with the residents.
Oxton Grange care home is a wonderful, purpose-built home for senior citizens within well maintained landscaped gardens.
During their first visit on 9 October, the children presented the residents with flowers and then they had drinks and snacks together.
The Intergenerational Exchange offers a chance for children to visit older people in a care home to socialise and participate in activities together. The activities benefit everyone, giving residents and children opportunities for socialising, mental and physical stimulation, emotional support and personal growth.
"It was the most heart-warming trip I've been on. The children and the residents loved it, and they are looking forward to going again.
In a post on Oxton Grange's Facebook page, we got to see what they thought. They said, our Intergenerational Reading Group was utterly enchanting. Pupils from Co-op Academy Portland brought such warmth, joy and enthusiasm with their shared reading. To quote [one of the residents] Sheila “It’s been the happiest day”.
"We can’t wait to see our new friends again soon, huge appreciation to teachers Mrs Smith and Miss Smith for making our home feel at the centre of our community."
